Miguel Diaz-Canel has been nominated by Cuba’s national assembly as the sole candidate for president, the first from outside the Castro family in nearly 60 years.
MPs have voted but the results will not be confirmed until Thursday, that is when Diaz-Canel is expected to be sworn in.
But outgoing President Raul Castro will stay on as head of the Communist Party.
