Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager with immediate effect after more than two and half years in charge.
The Premier League club, which sits in sixth place with 26 points – 19 less than league leaders Liverpool – said in a statement on Tuesday: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.”
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
Mourinho had been tasked with bringing back the glory days to the 20-time English champions after three lean years since Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
