Mike Pompeo is in Egypt as part of a Middle East tour aimed at reassuring Arab partners after President Donald Trump announced his plans to withdraw US forces from Syria.
Pompeo met Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Thursday and held talks with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry to discuss security and economic cooperation.
He will also deliver a speech on Washington’s broader Middle East objectives.
Although he will touch on various issues, Pompeo is most likely to not discuss Egypt’s human rights issues, according to Marwan Bishara, our senior political analyst.
Bishara has been invited by Al Jazeera to discuss the US Secretary of State’s visit to the Middle East.
