John Bolton has filled in the blanks of Donald Trump’s corruption of the American Presidency.
In the book, Bolton claims that Trump asked multiple foreign governments to help him win reelection. Trump okayed concentration camps in China. Trump ignored critical intelligence briefings. And Trump knew he was engaging in photo-op diplomacy with North Korea at great risk to us all.
Yet there’s deep a moral failure about the role of John Bolton as well. He was happy to witness these transgressions and do nothing about them. He never blew the whistle. He didn’t resign in protest. He rejected testifying to Congress during the impeachment hearings while valiant civil servants did. He failed to uphold his Constitutional responsibilities by allowing our country’s security to be sold to the highest bidder. We should expect more from a National Security Adviser.
So the big takeaway from this book is that the presidency is in even worse shape than we thought… and that the people serving Trump have done scant little to stop it.
