Dr John Nicholls is a clinical professor at the University of Hong Kong who studies influenza viruses including the one behind the deadly 2002-2003 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars). His current work is focused on the new 2019-ncov coronavirus, which he says is “replicating more rapidly than many other viruses”. Speaking with the South China Morning Post, Dr Nicholls also said he does not expect a vaccine can be made available for the novel coronavirus before the outbreak runs its course.Image credit: John Nicholls, Leo Poon and Malik Peiris, The University of Hong Kong
