Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, China has stepped up legal protections for pangolins, one of the world’s most endangered animals which are in high demand in part because their scales are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Some environmentalists in China are now working to build the country’s pangolin population, organising to release a group of them into the wild on June 12, 2020. Pangolins were removed from China’s official list of traditional medicines on June 9, amid concerns that the animals were a possible link to the source of the novel coronavirus.
