Mongolians headed to the polls to elect a new parliament on June 24, 2020, under the cloud of the coronavirus pandemic. Some candidates have been criticised for flouting lockdown rules, and thousands of Mongolians stranded overseas will be unable to cast votes. After the nation imposed some of the world’s toughest and lengthiest measures to contain Covid-19, Mongolia has reported only about 215 cases and zero deaths from the disease. Some have attributed Mongolia’s success to Genghis Khan, saying his legacy of discipline has helped the nation’s over 3 million people observe the strict lockdown rules.
