TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew battled for the survival of the hugely popular video-sharing app in Washington on March 23, 2023, as he faced a barrage of accusations from lawmakers over the company’s alleged ties to China and about the hazards the app allegedly poses for teenagers. Members of the US House of Representatives said they fear Beijing could subvert the site for spying and harvesting data. The US federal government and more than two dozen US states have banned government employees from using TikTok on official work devices, and other nations including those in Europe and Canada have followed suit.
