Britain’s immigration minister has defended the government’s handling of the rise in migrants and refugees crossing the English Channel.
More than 220 people have attempted the crossing since November.
It may only be a 50km journey from Calais to Dover but the English Channel is one of the worlds busiest shipping lanes, making the risk of collision with one of the boats or ferries high and crossing the notoriously rough channel potentially deadly.
Some politicians in France have called for more patrol boats but others are worried that their increased presence will encourage more people to take this dangerous journey.
Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Calais and Sonia Gallego reports from Dover.
