Liberal Senator Dave Sharma has criticised the “timing and setting” of Penny Wong’s Palestinian statehood comments as “incredibly reckless”.
Senator Wong, during an ANU conference on Tuesday, signalled the Albanese government is considering recognising Palestinian statehood.
Mr Sharma said the Hamas leadership is only “taking encouragement right now” from what Australia is saying and doing.
The Liberal Senator however has not totally dismissed the two-state solution but urged the Australian government to “be realistic about how and when it could be resurrected”.
“Peace ultimately comes about when there’s a level of trust between peoples, and that’s what we need to focus on rebuilding,” he told Sky News Australia.
“These are not tasks that can be done within a year or two.”
