In a desperate race to source critical medical supplies for the fight against Covid-19, some airlines around the world are converting passenger jets to serve as improvised freight flights. Japan’s All Nippon Airways has started using passenger planes idled by the coronavirus pandemic, filling seats with medical supplies instead of travellers to expand cargo capacity on the jets. Meanwhile, some cargo flights sent to collect medical supplies from China have had to return home empty. Fierce global competition for masks, gloves, ventilators and other equipment has created gridlock at Chinese airports.
