As the medical community of 2020 continues its frantic search for a vaccine against the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, images from more than a half century ago show an aspect of the scientific research that is still in use today. In 1956, British specialists in a laboratory at the National Institute of Medical Research at Mill Hill, in London were filmed developing vaccines for influenza using eggs. But the approach to fight what was then often referred to as “the big sneeze”, is today overshadowed by genetic engineering that is at the forefront of efforts to quickly identify and produce a vaccine to defend people against the coronavirus behind the Covid-19 pandemic.
