When US women’s soccer resumed after coronavirus rules eased in late June 2020, players knelt during the national anthem while wearing “Black Lives Matter” T-shirts. The protest showed that as coronavirus restrictions ease and sporting events resume, the contentious issue of making such political statements is also back on the field in the US, where the Black Lives Matter protests have focused on fighting police brutality. The debate has echoes in Hong Kong, where new legislation has fans and players alike risking jail time if they were to stage protests during China’s national anthem as has happened in the past.
