The prime minister addresses the Commons and begins by offering his condolences to the family and friends of Jack Meritt and Saskia Jones who were killed in the London Bridge terror attack last month.

He goes on to congratulate Sir Lindsay Hoyle on his re-election as Speaker and says: “I think that this Parliament is a vast improvement on its predecessor.”

The PM, you’ll remember, made much during the election campaign of Parliament’s refusal to allow him to do what he wanted – to “get Brexit done”, as the phrase goes…

He describes the new Commons as “one of the best Parliament’s this country has ever produced”, with a record number of female and ethnic minority members.

Mr Johnson says the new Parliament will also be “vastly more democratic” and will not “waste the time of the nation in deadlock, division and delay”.

“What is this Parliament going to do?” he asks the Tories behind him.

They don’t get it at first, so he tries again, Pantomime style – to get the response he wants.

This time his MPs deliver – “Get Brexit done!” the Tory benches chant.
