There have been 55,000 additional deaths in the UK in the ten weeks since the first death from coronavirus, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.
It says all of them are related to the pandemic. The figures also show that more than 11,500 people have died in care homes after contracting the coronavirus infection.
MPs have criticised the government for failing to deliver an effective system of testing for the virus earlier in the outbreak. The Commons Science and Technology Committee said the number of tests carried out has been inadequate. Ministers have defended their strategy.
