Taiwan’s ruling party looks to hold onto the presidency as counting is underway for the country’s general election.
It is believed to be a blow to China, which claims Taiwan as its own.
Beijing despises the island’s current leadership and prefers the Nationalist Party of China (KMT).
The Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate, Taiwanese Vice-President Lai Ching-te, is in the lead with 40 per cent of the vote.
He is followed by KMT candidate Hou Yu-ih with 32.7 per cent, and TPP candidate Ko Wen-je with 27.3 per cent.
