In 2011, Kenya implemented a ban on the harmful tradition of female genital mutilation (FGM). Despite the ban, a form of FGM known as “medicalised FGM” is still being performed by healthcare professionals. A report by Unicef in 2021 revealed that medicalised FGM has risen in countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Guinea and Kenya. The rise in medicalised FGM has sparked growing concerns among health workers as it undermines efforts to eradicate the practice altogether.
