A group of astronomers in Greece observed what’s being called “the green comet” from a hilltop observatory, in an event believed to have last occurred in the Neanderthal era. The comet had just been discovered in 2022, and was closest to Earth on February 1, 2023. Unlike the famous Halley’s comet, which passes by Earth every 75-79 years, scientists believe this green comet last returned to Earth 50,000 years ago. Officially titled C/2022 E3 (ZTF), it earned its nickname owing to its distinct greenish hue.
