Malaysia on March 1, 2020, swore in Muhyiddin Yassin as the nation’s eighth prime minister, following his appointment by the king and a week of political chaos sparked by the shock resignation of his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad. Muhyiddin’s appointment has sparked criticism and drawn out dozens of protesters to Merdeka Square in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Critics worry that Muhyiddin as leader will bolster the influence of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), the party of disgraced former prime minister Najib Razak, who faces dozens of corruption charges arising from the vast 1MDB scandal. Umno dominated Malaysian politics for decades but lost power and was forced into opposition after the May 2018 election. Many fear the recent political upheaval and Malaysia’s shifting coalitions could create an opportunity for Umno to regain lost ground.
