In an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post, a top Rwandan diplomat stated that Rwanda will not succumb to pressure and align itself with either the United States or China in their superpower rivalry. The diplomat also emphasized that Beijing has provided significant assistance to numerous African nations and has been particularly beneficial.
James Kimonyo, the ambassador of Rwanda to China, emphasized the significance of both Washington and Beijing as crucial partners for Rwanda. Over the past thirty years, Rwanda has been focused on reconstructing its economy following the conclusion of its civil war.
The United States is an ally of ours. Similarly, he declared that China was our ally. “We are not susceptible to intimidation or coercion.” We firmly believe that China is a valuable ally, and no one can convince us otherwise.
Kimonyo, who served as Rwanda’s ambassador to the United States from 2007 to 2013, emphasized the need for a “framework” to effectively manage any conflicts that may arise among major global powers.
Regarding the United States and China, he observed that despite their disagreements on certain matters, the two nations have engaged in a sequence of talks and prominent visits.
In November, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with American President Joe Biden in San Francisco, resulting in the reestablishment of military communication and exchanges between the two nations.
During a recent phone conversation, the individuals also engaged in a comprehensive discussion covering topics such as American restrictions on technology and trade barriers imposed by China.
