Pope Francis sent greetings to the “noble” people of China, in an apparent overture to Beijing to ease restrictions on religion. The apparent unscripted comments came during a mass the pope held on September 3, 2023, at the end of his four-day visit to Mongolia. Pope Francis made the remarks as he was flanked by former and current Hong Kong archbishops Cardinal John Tong and Archbishop Stephen Chow.
