A rare hybrid solar eclipse drew crowds of amateur and professional astronomers to a beachside town in Australia on April 20, 2023. The eclipse was both a total solar eclipse, in which the moon blots out the sun, as well as an annular one where only the centre is obscured. However, the total solar eclipse was only visible in Australia, East Timor and Indonesia. The rare event only occurs about once a decade, with the next expected in 2031.
