The latest attack on Al Jazeera staff is both an attempt to prevent their reporting and eliminate eyewitnesses to Israeli atrocities in Gaza, according to Hassan Barari, a professor of international affairs at Qatar University.
“They are targeting Al Jazeera correspondents simply because they want to silence them,” Barari told Al Jazeera.
Israel is “annoyed” by the Qatar-based broadcaster’s coverage and the fact it enjoys a worldwide audience, Barari added. “They want to kill the eyewitnesses” documenting attacks against Palestinians.
Killing and maiming Al Jazeera journalists is a way to also pressure Qatar – a key mediator between Israel and Hamas. Bullying Qatar allows Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu to promote a truce deal favourable to Israel’s interests, he said.
On Tuesday, an Israeli drone strike severely wounded two journalists in Miraj, north of Rafah city, including Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Ismail Abu Omar, who had his leg amputated.
