A massive volcanic eruption in Tonga almost two years ago could bring wet weather to eastern parts of Australia.

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai undersea volcano eruption in 2022 triggered a 15-metre-tall tsunami and sent shockwaves around the world.

Scientists have since estimated that 146 Gigalitres of water was propelled into the stratosphere.

Almost two years later the impacts are still being felt.

A new research suggests water vapour from the explosion is breaking down the ozone layer over Antarctica, which in turn is impacting the weather in Australia.
