China has seen intense heatwaves and drought conditions across the country. The scenic Flaming Mountains in China’s western Xinjiang province recorded an 80-degree Celsius (176°F) surface temperature on July 16, 2023. Meanwhile, the Chinese municipality of Chongqing opened cooling shelters at railway stations after temperatures there reached 37 degrees Celsius (98.6°F), as China’s southern provinces experience heavy flooding.
